The other day, I went to an award ceremony for a friend from the high school days, she received this prestigious award for doing humanitarian stuff in China and all that good stuff and a cup of tea.
It lead me to think about helping people. Actually helping people. Different aspects of it. I'm in psychology at University, and what most students want to do is become teachers, specialists with children or the elderly; or social workers. I'm always the odd one who wants to do something that's *seemingly* not related to psychology
in my mind, I think its related anyway fff I decided long ago I would not want to go ANYWHERE NEAR social worker, but thats just me; I'm not saying its stupid and boring, quite the opposite. I think you need lots of dedication and guts to be a social worker. My point is, we reward people for doing the pretty obvious things when it comes to helping.
My friend helped an orphanage in China, another person 'gave to his community for 30 years' whatever that means, some do the obvious helping; social workers go out to help children in broken families, nurses, doctors, etc help people and save lives... and have every right to be recognized for it.
I'm wondering of those who do similar things, but not as obvious. I'm thinking of animation/artists' works (its what I do, my general field of interest

). I've heard people calling artists "selfish", not thinking of other people; which led me to have contrasting feelings about that comment. Sure, some do it for themselves, but its more of a subjective thing than objective, isn't it? Its looking into the human soul/mind/spirit whatever you want to call it and presenting it in some shape or form? If we find something that really touches us, does it change our lives?
Could devoting time and effort into a piece of art be as important as devoting time and effort helping children in an orphanage in China? Do both have the same capacity to change lives, one being more obvious than the other?
Two examples I can think of is
1: While listening to the commentaries of The Little Mermaid, one of the directors/animators
(Can't remember) said at the end of the movie, this one man sent a letter, saying how this movie helped patch up his relationship with his estranged daughter.
and
2: this always brings me close to tears, its so beautiful and touching.

We might reward these works of art or movies with 'artistic' awards; (off the top of my head, the Oscar award) but you can't really reward them for humanitarian-relating things, can we? Since these works of art seem to touch on the eye of the beholder, and not an entire community?
I don't know, I'm just ranting I guess, but it seems weird to me is all. Psychology is really getting to me this semester x______x;;
Any opinions?? Rants of their own about this??
